Lessons FAQ

Why should I (or my child) study with you?

When you study with JHM you get one-on-one time with a teacher who understands that it really is all about what you want to learn. We have no agenda to somehow get you to like music you don’t connect with or try to convince you there is only one correct approach to the skill you are learning – life is complicated and the options are limitless! Our only goal is to help you feel good about the progress you make, the material you choose to work on, and the combination of techniques we build together to add to your musical toolbox. With over 10 years of private lessons teaching experience, no matter what your goal is, we can help you get started on the journey. Lesson plans and curriculum are designed from scratch to fit each individual student. Jessica’s special brand of encouragement, positivity, and passion for helping each student achieve their goals make the learning fun and the knowledge stick. You can read more about Jessica in her Bio or check out her resume to learn more.

What do you teach, again?

Voice, piano, theory, and composition lessons and coaching.

What is the difference between a lesson and a coaching?

Lessons recur at regular intervals and deal mostly with technical matters, such as developing range, dexterity, or theoretical knowledge. Coachings, on the other hand, are scheduled on an as-needed basis and have a time-specific goal to be accomplished in a single session – such as learning a song for an audition, getting last minute input on a piece for a recital, or having an extra eye review your notation on a song or composition.

How do you schedule sessions?

Sessions are scheduled by prior agreement between you and JHM via e-mail or phone. This contact information will be provided to you upon your first correspondence via the contact us or lesson sign-up forms.
