About Il Capitano e Columbina

Il Capitano e Columbina (2008) (ca. 7′) is a programmatic tragicomic chamber orchestra work that explores the Commedia dell’Arte archetypes of Il Capitano and Columbina.  The character of Il Capitano is portrayed through three different motifs, including the use of leaping perfect fourths (to evoke his military fantasies), slow descending half steps (his melodrama), and the leap of an octave answered by chromatic triplets (his comic appearance.)  Columbina is portrayed through a sensuous melody based on augmented triads.  In an abstract narrative, we experience Il Capitano’s lust for Columbina, her scorn of him, his sadness and longing for her, and ultimately the recovery of his wounded pride back to his buffoonish and bombastic self.
